Position Description:

The Aspen Global Innovators Group is seeking a Managing Director to guide and lead our growing portfolio of work. The Managing Director will work closely with the Executive Director to develop strategy, manage staff, design new programs, manage finances, fundraise, forge new partnerships, and represent the program externally. The Managing Director is a senior member of the team and the Aspen Institute and holds responsibility with the Executive Director for oversight and management of all program resources and staff. Aspen Global Innovators Group seeks a seasoned, committed, and energetic professional with deep experience in global development, leadership development, breakthrough and innovative strategies to address global health, poverty alleviation and leadership. The successful candidate will have a proven track record of managing small – medium sized teams, developing world class programs, fundraising multi-million-dollar budgets, and possessing exceptional communications skills.

Essential duties and responsibilities are as follows:

Program Strategy, Management, and Implementation

  • Work closely with ED to develop, implement, refine, and grow programs and impact
  • Identify, design, and implement new programs
  • Work closely with ED and Senior Program Manager to oversee and manage all AGI projects including New Voices Fellowship, AMP Health, Healthy Communities Fellowship, Aspen Forum on Women and Girls, The Global Collaborative for Community Based Pandemic Preparedness, Artisan Alliance, and Aspen Ideas Health
  • Lead strategy refresh of AGI with ED and team
  • Provide strategic guidance and oversight to program directors on project management, financial viability, impact, workplan, and coherence with AGI mission and goals
  • Lead programs including Global Collaborative for Community Based Leadership in Pandemic Preparedness, Vaccine Equity Working Group, and Healthy Communities Fellowship

Fundraising and Financial Management

  • Manage fundraising from foundations, corporations, individuals, and governments to support all AGI programs and core staff to include program design, grant writing, donor relationships, and ensuring receipt and monitoring of funds
  • Develop annual and program budgets together with ED and Senior Program Manager and participate in monthly budget meetings with each project and core staff
  • Together with Senior Program Manager identify financial challenges and identify solutions
  • Ensure all financial and donor compliance with Senior Program Manager

External Relations and Communications

  • Identify and develop strategic partnerships, external relationships, and new opportunities
  • Be a thought partner to the ED and develop new ideas for greatest impact
  • Work in partnership with ED and Program Directors to maintain highest quality philanthropic relationships
  • Contribute to AGI strategic communications plan and serve as external spokesperson
  • Strengthen communications and brand of AGI and lead on annual report

Knowledge, Education, and Experience:

The ideal candidate for this role has the following desired skills/experience:

  • Skilled professional with a 5 – 10 years of senior-level strategic leadership experience spanning the private, public and/or the nonprofit sectors with significant international experience
  • A track record of working internationally with senior-level stakeholders in the private, public and/or nonprofit sectors on multi-million-dollar programs and initiatives in global development or global health
  • Deep understanding of global health and leadership development in emerging markets 
  • Extensive experience directing teams on diverse programs and projects: strong preference for professional experience in Africa
  • Highly organized, goal-oriented self-starter who excels at handling multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent communication and management skills, including supporting and mentoring global teams
  • Strong budgeting and financial management skills required
  • Ability to represent Aspen Global Innovators Group at high level events and interfaces with external partners speaking knowledgeably on topics connected to global health and global development
  • Thrives in big picture possibility and strategy and can also hold the details needed for high-quality execution
  • Proven ability to engage, inspire, grow and influence diverse leaders and communities of color and transcend divisive fault lines
  • Demonstrated project planning and high-quality execution skills
  • Entrepreneurial acumen and drive, ability to see and respond to opportunities to strengthen and/or course correct to increase impact
  • Thrives in high performing, intellectually rich environment and as part of a collaborative team
  • Demonstrated commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion
  • Willingness and ability to travel
  • Second language skills such as Spanish, Portuguese and/or French a plus
  • Bachelors and Masters degree in relevant discipline required

Level of Authority:

  • Supervisory position
  • Budget authority
