The Aspen Network of Development Entrepreneurs (ANDE)
The Aspen Network of Development Entrepreneurs (ANDE) is a program within the Aspen Institute. The Aspen Network of Development Entrepreneurs (ANDE) is a global network of organizations that propel entrepreneurship in emerging markets. ANDE members provide critical financial, educational, and business support services to small and growing businesses (SGBs) based on the conviction that SGBs will create jobs, stimulate long-term economic growth, and produce environmental and social benefits. Ultimately, we believe that SGBs can help lift countries out of poverty. Launched with 34 members in 2009, ANDE now comprises nearly 300 members who collectively operate in more than 150 countries.

ANDE is looking for a Communications Manager, based in our Washington, DC office. This is a full-time position.

Position Description

The Communications Manager manages the development and day to day work of ANDE’s global communications team. The position currently reports to the Director of Strategic Development. This role currently supervises a Regional Communications Coordinator, supporting ANDE’s regional chapters in the execution of effective email, web, and social media communications. The Manager’s role includes a combination of strategic communications, managing primary global communications channels, and contributing to advocacy and influencing efforts via content creation and media pitching.

Strategic Communications (60%)

  • Strategic oversight of ANDE’s overall communications work related to design, tone, quality control. and organizational positioning. This includes implementing and updating ANDE’s standard operating procedures (SOPs, or playbooks) for communications at the regional and global levels and making decisions on structure and processes for a complex organizational unit. Where needed, establish or update systems and policies to best manage use of limited communications resources.
  • Supervise and lead the communications function across ANDE, including the communications team of regional leads across ANDE’s regional chapters in collaboration with ANDE’s regional chapter heads to meet programs, events, and membership objectives.
  • Maintain an updated strategy for the use of ANDE’s various communications channels (email, website, social media channels, media placements) and their intended audiences, optimal delivery schedule, and content strategy.
  • In close coordination with the Executive Director and other senior leadership, craft, update, and execute an organizational communications strategy and plan opportunities for growth and impact and a tactical path forward to execute this strategy, including setting priorities and clearly articulating goals and target audiences.
  • Lead communications work planning process across all eight ANDE chapters. Consult regularly with individual chapters on the design and implementation of their communications strategies, including effective leverage of existing accounts and platforms and launching new efforts.
  • Onboard and train ANDE staff in communications portfolio and conduct regular meetings and training to keep them up to date.
  • Oversee ANDE’s website, ensuring it is functional and updated. Liaise with IT team to ensure technical requirements are met for functional support across ANDE’s programs. Keep playbook for website maintenance updated. Where needed, identify and work with existing or new vendors as required for support functions.
  • Oversee ANDE brand management and brand compliance across the organization and ensure appropriate acknowledgement by members, partners, and other stakeholders.
  • Create and implement communications toolkits for ANDE announcements, reports, events, and more, for both internal and external use.
  • Seek out media placements via op-eds or story pitches related to ANDE priorities in high value outlets and manage relationships with PR firms and media as needed.

Content Management and Dissemination (20%)

  • Manage ANDE’s approach to share curated content generated by ANDE members, regional chapters, research team, and other partners and stakeholders across its channels.
  • Oversee ANDE editorial calendar to ensure even distribution of e-mails and other communications and leverage global events and opportunities for communications efforts.
  • Execute the global portion of ANDE’s comms strategy directly via email communications (monthly newsletter, major announcements, report launches etc.), plus website and social media updates.
  • Manage, edit, and write original content for ANDE’s blog and other channels to highlight key program areas and tell stories of ANDE and our members, and connect to advocacy work. Review and copyedit publications and other materials.
  • Support chapter communications leads in their communications efforts and consult on chapter communications issues.
  • Enforce communications protocols and guidance among chapter staff, including reviewing content and designs.
  • Serve as main communications point of contact for members related to communications needs, requests, and strategy.
  • As needed, lead global efforts for ANDE member communications points of contact around a particular theme, event, or campaign.

Advocacy (10%)

  • In coordination with ANDE advocacy team, support key organizational advocacy objectives by identifying and researching target audiences and developing a comprehensive communications strategy to reach them.
  • Identify media placements, op-eds, direct meetings and speaking opportunities for the Executive Director and other leaders to further this agenda. Develop key talking points and other content for those purposes.

Admin (10%)

  • Supervise Regional Communications Associates, rotating interns, and all communications contractors or vendors, including external graphic designer.
  • Manage budget and workplan for communications.
  • Contribute to the development of proposals that incorporate a communications element. Liaise with funders and supporters to ensure compliance with requirements on all project-supported communications.
  • Support the Strategic Development, Research, Membership and Programs, and chapter teams, as well as project-based teams related to specific grants and deliverables.
  • Manage ANDE’s photo and image resources, including sourcing photos from members and other external sources and tracking image use across ANDE platforms.
  • Define, track, and report on measures of success by analyzing and using analytics to inform communications strategy.
  • Work with IT team to manage administration of ANDE communications tools, including Canva, Hootsuite, Campaign Monitor, Wordpress, etc.
  • Serve as principal point of contact with the Aspen Institute communications department to make use of organizational resources, including design requests, media placements, and inclusion of ANDE in Aspen communications.

Target Profile:

  • 8-10 years of experience in relevant communications roles with prior supervisory experience.
  • Master’s degree in Communications with some International Development related education and/or experience preferred.
  • Prior background working in an international context and ability to work well across cultures required.
  • Excellent writing and editing skills, including proofreading and copyediting. Strong attention to detail required.
  • Experience leading the development of a communication strategy, implementing social media strategies, managing communications vendors and consultants, setting budgets and developing internal workplans.
  • Prior experience in media placements for organizational op-eds.
  • Basic web editing skills, preferably WordPress.
  • Experience managing social media accounts, including social media management platforms such as Hootsuite and with software tools including Campaign Monitor, Salesforce, Asana a plus.
  • Experience with basic graphic design; knowledge of Adobe suite or Canva a plus.
  • Experience using analytics to inform strategy.
  • Self-starter who thrives in a fast-paced environment and experienced in juggling multiple, competing priorities a must.
  • Second language, particularly French, Portuguese or Spanish, a plus.
