Communications Associate

The Sports & Society Program

The mission of the Sports & Society Program is to convene leaders, facilitate dialogue and inspire solutions that help sports serve the public interest. The program provides a venue for thought leadership where knowledge can be deepened and breakthrough strategies explored on a range of issues.

An initiative of the Sports & Society Program, Project Play provides stakeholders with opportunities to build healthy communities through sports, starting with access to a quality sport activity for all children. We develop, apply and share knowledge that can be used to mobilize stakeholders from the national to local levels. Our work has been used by many organizations, from professional leagues to media companies, grassroots providers to community foundations, to introduce programs or shape youth strategies related to sports.

Function

Implements integrated content across multiple platforms, including websites, email, and social media channels.  The Associate builds and maintains key tools and software, brand materials, and engages with key stakeholders and partners to promote our brands and helps each initiative achieve its communications goals. Supports critical communication functions including website maintenance, electronic communications, social media and events.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Website and Social Media

  • Maintain web properties projectplay.us; teamworktoolkit.projectplay.us; healthysportindex.com and our Aspen Institute Sports & Society program page, updating content promptly, and ensuring minimal downtime and website breaks
  • In collaboration with our Editorial Director and Aspen Institute communications team, place our content on its web platforms, social media, and other channels
  • Produce engaging and substantive digital content to meet programís needs
  • Serve as a key strategist for social media efforts and manage requested social media platforms (e.g. Twitter, Facebook, and/or Instagram)

Content Creation and Editing

  • Project manage the design and production of our publications, working with outside firms to create high-quality materials in accordance with Aspen Institute brand guidelines
  • Understand digital design principles to advise writers and researchers on how to organize content for readability and user experience
  • Develop and edit requested communications tools such as graphics, promotional documents, one-pagers, PowerPoint presentations, social media toolkits, videos, and other outputs
  • Create communications outreach toolkit for community projects

Event Support

  • Serve as a member of the Project Play Summit Planning teaming with responsibility for developing and managing the day-of logistical schedule
  • Support the planning and execution of other convenings, both virtual and in-person including day-of event logistics, as needed

Project Management and Teamwork

  • Participate on a variety of projects across the organization and be willing to work outside of core area of expertise
  • Advise on ways to improve workflows between communications department and rest of organization, being flexible and resourceful as priorities change
  • Contribute to team-wide learning and knowledge management, including drawing on and contributing to other Aspen Institute programs and resources

Knowledge, Education and Experience Sought:

  • 3-5 years of relevant experience in a communications or marketing role
  • Experience creating digital content and managing social media channels
  • Experience in managing digital content systems (such as WordPress or SquareSpace) and of social media management tools
  • Graphic design skills and website development and maintenance
  • Excellent written and verbal communications ability
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to multi-task on numerous projects, large and small, in both collaborative and independent situations
  • Ability to work autonomously and with a small team
  • Some knowledge of or interest in issues related youth sports and sports diplomacy is a plus

The Institute has implemented a mandatory COVID vaccination policy for all employees who will work at one of our physical locations, attend any of our in-person events or travel on behalf of the Institute. Staff unable to be vaccinated may request an exemption under certain circumstances.
