Communications Manager

Location: Washington, DC

The Aspen Partnership for an Inclusive Economy (APIE) 

APIE is the first-ever enterprise level initiative of the Institute which seeks to address one of the defining challenges of our time -- growing economic inequality. The Aspen Partnership for an Inclusive Economy harnesses assets from across the Institute – combining the ideas, talents and resources of the public, private, and nonprofit sectors to develop solutions to address the growing threat of economic inequality. Through this platform the Aspen Institute seeks to accelerate the tipping point for change.

 The Mastercard Center for Inclusive Growth serves as a founding partner in the Aspen Partnership for an Inclusive Economy, with a cornerstone investment of $26 million. The Partnership is co-chaired by Ida Rademacher, Vice President and Executive Director of the Institute’s Financial Security Program, and Dana J. Hyde, who most recently served as CEO of the Millennium Challenge Corporation.


The Communications Manager will be a part of a small, pioneering team embedded within the vibrant larger environment of the Aspen Institute in its Washington, DC, headquarters. This position presents an opportunity to shape, manage, and support an ambitious new effort to bring together purpose-driven leaders from across the Institute’s programs and networks in pursuit of the common goal of inclusive growth and shared prosperity. We are seeking a multi-talented Communications Manager to develop and oversee the Institute’s communication strategy around this important and urgent topic. From leveraging best practices in social media outreach to developing and implementing a strategy to share written and visual content about the Institute’s programs and activities across communications platforms, the Communications Manager will have a keen interest in elevating the profile of the Institute and its programmatic work on this topic. Competitive candidates will be strategic thinkers, deft collaborators, and engaging storytellers with a track record of accomplishment in fast-paced environments and matrix organizations. This individual must be flexible and team-oriented, eager to not only direct and manage projects but also to roll up their sleeves to fulfill a wide range of responsibilities as a member of a small team.


  • Conceptualize and implement a strategic communications plan for inclusive economy related blogs, events, and other creative content

  • Track, analyze, and report audience and content engagement data using analytical tools to inform future digital content and social media strategies

  • Develop and implement a social media strategy to better engage and inform stakeholders

  • Identify, craft, and disseminate written and multimedia products to highlight the Institute’s impact on issues of inclusive economy 

  • Maintain and develop strong media relationships with reporters and outlets covering issues related to an inclusive economy

  • Work with the Institute’s communications team to amplify and promote program leaders and their public facing work 

  • Curate storybank to capture program impact and for use in various formats

  • Manage the APIE bi-weekly newsletter and work cross-functionally on content development

Website and Social Media Responsibilities:

  • Key strategist and implementer for social media efforts

  • Maintain and manage content on various social media and online platforms, including Twitter and LinkedIn

  • Make APIE webpage a valuable hub, well-visited by partners and allies, soliciting blogs and updated content from relevant Institute programs

Shared Responsibilities:

  • Actively participate in program design and strategic planning for APIE

  • Contribute to team-wide learning and knowledge management, including drawing on and contributing to other Aspen Institute programs and resources

  • Supervise consultants on projects related to communications


  • Minimum five years integrated communications experience, digital media, film, and/or other related or strategic communications experience with a track record of accomplishment

  • Communications or issue and/or political campaign and demonstrated expertise conceptualizing and advancing policy efforts at the local, state, and federal level

  • Attention to detail and ability to manage multiple tasks

  • Awareness, knowledge, sensitivity, and ability to build relationships with people of all backgrounds and communications skills

  • Knowledge of web, social media, and digital content trends

  • Superior writing and editing skills

  • Knowledge of public policy, news and content trends

  • Comfortable in a fast-paced digital publishing environment

  • Knowledge of HTML, CSS, Wordpress, Photoshop, online analytics

  • Ability to work autonomously and with a small team and attention to detail and ability to manage multiple tasks

  • Awareness, knowledge, sensitivity, and ability to build relationships with people of all backgrounds and communications skills

  • Graphic design skills and website development and maintenance a plus

  • Strong organizational skills; the ability to plan and follow through with staff and a variety of constituencies in consistent, high-quality manner
