The Aspen Network of Development Entrepreneurs (ANDE)

The Aspen Network of Development Entrepreneurs (ANDE) is a program within the Aspen Institute. ANDE is a global membership network of organizations that propel entrepreneurship in emerging markets. ANDE members provide critical financial, educational, and business support services to small and growing businesses (SGBs) based on the conviction that SGBs will create jobs, stimulate long-term economic growth, and produce environmental and social benefits. Ultimately, we believe that SGBs can help lift countries out of poverty.

Launched with 34 members in 2009, ANDE now comprises over 290 members that collectively operate in more than 150 countries. Members of ANDE include both for and nonprofit investment funds, capacity development providers, research and academic institutions, development finance institutions, foundations and corporations from around the world. Based in Washington, D.C. with eight offices in emerging markets, the ANDE team works hard to support members globally, and locally, while building strong ecosystems for entrepreneurial growth. ANDE develops unique initiatives to address systemic challenges and seize opportunities that can only be approached through collective action.

ANDE’s South African Chapter is looking for a full-time Programme Associate, based in our South African office.

The Job Spec

You are a “yes, and…” type of person. You are excited about taking on new tasks and challenges and are eager to create great experiences for others, from creating a meeting report to managing a well-executed event. If multi-tasking was an Olympic sport, you’d be a gold medal contender. Not only are you great at the details, but you also understand how small tasks can be essential to big, audacious goals like alleviating poverty. When you arrive at a dinner party, your first question is, “How can I help?” You are the go-to organiser for your friends and family. You often get the feedback that you can express your ideas clearly, verbally and written. You enjoy meeting new people and listening to what they do. You are resourceful and when you see a problem, you jump at the chance to fix it. You love the idea that your organisational and networking skills could contribute to a better livelihood for entrepreneurs throughout South Africa.

Position Description

Day to day work involves a wide variety of tasks from membership communication to database updates, topic area research, event preparation and facilitating. Each day will be different, and this role will provide exposure to a wide variety of skills experience and topic areas throughout the small and growing business space in developing countries. Specific responsibilities include:

  • Leading and owning specific project initiatives, such as Learning Labs, programmes and the Global Accelerator Learning Initiative (GALI), from conception to implementation.
  • Building relationships with members and facilitating connections between the network.
  • Scheduling of, and organising logistics for, meetings and networking events for members, as well as topic area webinars.
  • Supporting the communications strategy and all communication tasks when needed (newsletter, twitter, website, invites, etc.).
  • Serve as program representative, facilitator, and speaker at sector-specific events.
  • Management of chapter administrative tasks as needed.

The work routine involves a mix of in-office hours, work from home and external events. Flexible hours and remote work to enable communications with our international staff and members in other time zones is often needed.

The ideal candidate for this role:

  • Has 3-5 years of experience working in a similar role
  • Has worked in the ecosystem and has good knowledge of the ecosystem
  • Is resourceful, proactive and excited to learn and take on new challenges
  • Excellent attention to detail is essential
  • Project management experience preferable
  • Confident in public speaking and facilitation
  • Is organised, goal-oriented, proactive and excels at handling multiple priorities at once
  • Is a true team player and is excited about engaging with many cultures and learning about the sector
  • Thrives in a small team and startup environment, where the duty is on you to make it work.


  • Bachelor’s degree required, Masters preferred.
  • Able to travel up to 15% of the time within the region and internationally.
  • Has English as a first language.
  • Experience studying or working internationally is highly preferred.
  • The position is based in South Africa, preferably Johannesburg but consideration will be given to candidates based in Cape Town.
