Summer Intern, Institutional Advancement

Location: Aspen, CO

The Aspen Institute, founded in 1950, is an international non-profit organization dedicated to fostering enlightened leadership and open-minded dialogue. Through seminars, policy programs, conferences and leadership development initiatives, the Institute and its international partners seek to promote non-partisan inquiry and an appreciation for timeless values. 

The Aspen Institute Summer Internship Program employs rising college seniors or recent college graduates during the summer months in Aspen, Colorado. Internship opportunities are available in the following departments:  Institutional Advancement, Seminars, Administration, ITS, Conference Services, and Public Programs. All internships are paid positions. If you are applying for multiple positions in different departments, you must include a separate cover letter specific for each department.

The Aspen Institute’s Mission The Aspen Institute is an educational and policy studies organization based in Washington, DC. Its mission is to foster leadership based on enduring values and to provide a non-partisan venue for dealing with critical issues. The Institute has campuses in Aspen, Colorado, and on the Wye River on Maryland’s Eastern Shore. It also maintains offices in New York City and has an international network of partners.

Basic Function:

The Office of Institutional Advancement (OIA) provides stewardship and cultivation to the supporters of the Aspen Institute, as well as a unique programmatic experience. There will be six interns hired to manage Society of Fellows communications, Society of Fellows donor-exclusive event planning and execution, general OIA event support, and maintenance of a donor hotline. Interns will assist in the day-of operations for summer events including set-up, ticketing, microphone running, room monitoring, and clean-up. Each intern will provide administrative support and general assistance for the OIA department.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Provide general administrative support as needed (copying, answering phones, database entry, fulfilling requests for information, mailings, etc.).
  • Society of Fellows (SOF) event planning and execution duties include speaker travel arrangements, research, creating symposia readings, and recording/updating data in an online database.
  • Event duties include assistance with all aspects of event execution of Socrates Dinner and Summer Celebration fundraising events, including but not limited to processing all registrations, keeping detailed records, and preparing receipts. 
  • Correspondence includes answering emails and phone calls from donors, recording activities and event registration in Luminate, and answering questions regarding various summer events.
  • Communications duties include assistance with event invitations, event reminder emails, weekly newsletter, and RSVP tracking. 
  • Assist with staffing needs and logistical support of events, lectures and seminars.
  • Additional projects as requested by department staff. 

Knowledge, Education and Experience, and Skills:

  • Outstanding communication skills (including but not limited to phone skills, email skills, and interpersonal skills).
  • Organizational and time management skills with high attention to detail.
  • Team player with the ability to work well independently and with others.
  • Ability to represent the Institute to high-level donors in a positive, knowledgeable and professional manner.
  • Responds well in high-stress situations.
  • Initiative and responsiveness.
  • Ability to work on various projects at one time.
  • Willingness to go above and beyond.
  • Must be enrolled in or recent graduate of an accredited college.
    • Knowledge of Microsoft Office software.

Other requirements:   

  • Valid driver's license. Access to a vehicle is recommended.
  • Interns are responsible for their local housing, though the Institute will assist in locating opportunities when possible.
  • Authorized to work in the US.
  • Preference will be given to applicants living in the Roaring Fork Valley.
