The Aspen Institute, founded in 1950, is an international nonprofit organization dedicated to fostering enlightened leadership and open-minded dialogue.  Through seminars, policy programs, conferences and leadership development initiatives, the Institute and its international partners seek to promote nonpartisan inquiry and an appreciation for timeless values.  The Institute is headquartered in Washington, D.C., and has campuses in Aspen, Colorado, and on the Wye River on Marylandís Eastern Shore. 

The Aspen Institute Summer Internship Program employs rising college seniors or recent college graduates during the summer months in Aspen, Colorado. Internship opportunities are available in the following departments:  Institutional Advancement, Seminars, Administration, ITS, Conference Services, and Public Programs. All internships are paid positions. All internships are paid positions. Timeline for internship program:

  • Position Start Date: May 28, 2019
  • Position End Date: Mid-August, 2019
  • Hours per Week: 40+ (overtime will be paid as applicable)

Basic Function:   
This position will have the unique opportunity to work across two departments. For the first half of the summer, the intern will provide administrative support and general assistance for the Public Programs department, specifically by supporting the Festivalís Underwriter Manager. The second half of the summer will be spent in the Office of Institutional Advancement supporting the Society of Fellows as an events intern.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: 
Aspen Ideas Festival Responsibilities:

  • Assist Underwriter Manager by providing general administrative support for Aspen Ideas Festival underwriters. Examples of underwriters include companies like McKinsey and Company, Microsoft, Prudential, and Sotheby's. 
  • Collecting and tracking all underwriter speaker registration, including bios, headshots, and speaker releases
  • Drafting and sending Paperless Post invitations for all private underwriter events
  • Maintaining RSVP lists for all private underwriter events
  • Providing logistical support for all private underwriter events
  • Troubleshooting issues during Fest 1 and Fest 2 regarding Underwriter program management
  • Support follow up efforts of the Public Programs team with all Underwriters

Society of Fellows Responsibilities:

  • Provide general administrative support as needed (copying, answering phones, database entry, fulfilling requests for information, mailings, etc.).
  • Society of Fellows (SOF) event planning and execution duties include speaker travel arrangements, research, creating symposia readings, and recording/updating data in an online database.
  • Correspondence includes answering emails and phone calls from donors, recording activities and event registration in Luminate, and answering questions regarding various summer events.
  • Assist with staffing needs and logistical support of events, lectures and seminars.
  • Additional projects as requested by department staff.

 Other requirements:   

  • Valid driver's license
  • The Institute provides housing options to interns but interns are responsible for covering the cost of housing.
  • Authorized to work in the US

Knowledge, Skills, Education and Experience:  

  • High attention to detail (proofreading, identifying key information)
  • Strong research skills (articles and facts/stats)
  • Outstanding communication, organizational, and time management skills
  • Ability to maintain discretion and confidentiality with sensitive information
  • Event production/execution experience preferred
  • Strong technology literacy and proficiency with the Microsoft Office
  • Must be enrolled in or recent graduate of an accredited college
