Managing Director of Communications and Marketing

Department: COMMUNICATIONS
Location: Washington, DC

Its mission is to foster leadership based on enduring values and to provide a nonpartisan venue for dealing with critical issues. The Institute has campuses in Aspen, Colorado, and on the Wye River on Marylandís Eastern Shore. It also maintains offices in New York City and has a global network of partners.

Background

The Institute is recruiting a senior-level communications and marketing leader to serve as a key deputy to the EVP for Communications and Marketing in managing all aspects of a 25+ person department. The department has responsibility for:

  • Digital communications (web, social media, blog, video division, intranet, email marketing)
  • Marketing and branding (new brand and identity initiative underway)
  • Media relations and PR
  • An award-winning magazine and other print communications (an annual report and other collateral)
  • Digital analytics
  • Graphic design
  • An A/V and conference services unit
  • Support for executive communications (talking points, op-eds, and other materials, in close collaboration with Presidentís office)

The Communications and Marketing Department has many responsibilities but two key functions:

  • Weaving a compelling organizational narrative and communicating that story across multiple channels in support of organizational goals
  • Serving as the in-house agency that provides superior communications and marketing support to the Instituteís 25+ programs and public events 

Key Responsibilities

Key responsibilities of this position include:

  • Support EVP in managing day-to-day operations of team, to ensure high level of functioning and efficiency across various functional areas, outlined above
  • Lead departmentís efforts to provide outstanding service to 25+ Institute programs, regularly interfacing with teamís clients. Work to ensure programsí communications needs are met, while always thinking of how those goals fit into the larger organizational picture.
  • Advise the Instituteís various internal leaders on the development of their own capacities for effective initiative management and public messaging to advance organizational goals
  • Lead communications and marketing efforts in support of high-profile Institute events including the ten-day Aspen Ideas Festival in Aspen, CO each summer. Coordinate all areas within the department so that support is streamlined and seamless.
  • Working with EVP, create and implement AI marketing and communications plan annually
  • Develop cross-functional marketing strategies to leverage synergies between various organizational areas
  • Work with EVP to develop and manage department budget
  • Manage special projects as needed

Desired Experience and Qualifications

  • 10-15 years progressively senior experience in communications and marketing in some combination of the following: 1) an impactful nonprofit; 2) a mission-oriented for-profit organization or corporation; 3) a communications/marketing agency. A combination of the above is desirable. Some agency experience is highly desirable.
  • Very skilled in prioritizing, organizing, delegating and planning work. Outstanding management skills, with high emotional intelligence.
  • Results-oriented, with a deep understanding of and experience with using analytics and metrics to determine RoI and drive decision-making
  • Positive, optimistic, disciplined, and resourceful, with a desire for continuous improvement
  • A client-service mentality, with an ability to juggle multiple competing priorities
  • Outstanding written and verbal communications skills, and the confidence to provide effective advice, counsel and coaching on communications issues to senior leaders as well as peers/colleagues.
  • A critical thinker with a disposition to action and outstanding judgment
  • Some experience with market research and strategic planning
  • Some in-house experience managing the brand/reputation of a high-profile organization
  • Experience managing communications and marketing in support of complex, high-profile events
  • Some experience working with development teams in support of revenue goals desired but not required. Some experience with CRM also desirable.
  • A strong intellectual curiosity and passion for the Instituteís mission
