The Economic Opportunities Program (EOP)

EOP advances strategies, policies, and ideas to help low- and moderate-income people thrive in a changing economy. We collaborate with national and local leaders across the United States Ė nonprofit leaders, policymakers, labor leaders, business leaders, educators, academics, and more Ė and we actively seek input and ideas from individuals and communities affected by proposed approaches to address economic opportunity challenges. Through our leadership and fellowship programs; applied research and evaluation; data and analysis; and dialogue with diverse stakeholders, we work at both local and national levels to build understanding and galvanize action to address the challenge of economic opportunity in America..

EOP focuses on two primary areas through which people access economic opportunity in the US:  jobs and entrepreneurship/business ownership.  EOP's Business Ownership Initiative builds understanding of the role of business ownership as an economic opportunity strategy and EOPís Job Quality Center of Excellence is a new platform to drive improved job quality and economic dignity for workers through stakeholder engagement, idea generation, and resource sharing to prompt and support effective action toward a world of work that offers all working people economic stability, dignity and respect, and opportunities for mobility. The Job Quality Center of Excellence brings together the work of several long-standing initiatives including the Future of Work Initiative, Good Companies/Good Jobs, UpSkill America, and the Workforce Strategies Initiative.

Basic Function

As a member of EOPís communications team, the communications associate supports outreach around EOPís work. This includes drafting content for our website, emails, and social media; writing and copyediting materials such as blog posts, publications, and op-eds; identifying and pursuing opportunities for media engagement; tracking and reporting on EOP's performance data; and helping to plan and run events. The communications associate reports to the senior communications manager and works closely with the digital communications associate, and may be required to support their work as the need arises. Additional duties could include disseminating content through our website, emails, and social media; ensuring we have accurate, up-to-date information on our network of contacts; and designing publications, images, and multimedia. The communications associateís most impactful contribution to EOPís work will be maintaining a robust system of data collection and reporting ó so this position requires strong organizational skills and task management.

The successful candidate will possess the ability to understand and write about a range of policy topics ó including issues relating to employment, small business development, economic development, education, racial and gender equity, access to economic opportunity and othersó and produce compelling deliverables that strategically expand the reach of EOPís work. This position is ideal for someone with strong communications skills, intellectual curiosity and eagerness to learn, a passion for policies and strategies to expand economic opportunity and alleviate poverty, and demonstrated achievements in a communications-related role. Successful candidates must take initiative, manage sensitive and important relationships, meet project deadlines, and multi-task to effectively manage multiple projects simultaneously.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Writing and Editing

  • Draft content for EOPís communications channels, including website, emails, and social media.
  • Provide writing and copyediting support on blog posts, publications, op-eds, and other materials.
  • Work with external vendors to ensure quality and consistency with EOPís style and content.

Media Relations

  • Build press lists, identify media opportunities, and engage with media around EOPís work.
  • Support the development of key messages and press releases.
  • Track media coverage of EOPís work and topics of interest.

Data and Reporting

  • Regularly track and report on digital engagement (website, email, and social media) and data on public events.
  • Assist in identifying new metrics and opportunities for expanding how we measure the impacts and outcomes of our work.
  • Track and report on qualitative performance data, including project-specific engagements or testimonials.
  • Conduct A/B tests and make informed recommendations for improvement.

Event Planning

  • Support planning and execution of public events (virtual and in person), including outreach, promotion, coordination, logistics, reporting, and post-event communications.


  • Collaborate with the Aspen Instituteís central communications team, other Institute programs, and external organizations as partnership opportunities arise.
  • Assist in identifying and building relationships with new external partners who can assist in helping EOP advance its messaging and communications around key areas of its work.
  • Support the work of the communications team and other EOP staff as needed.

Content Expertise

  • Build knowledge and expertise about the context and ecosystem in which EOP works, including key issues, players, and policies.
  • Develop the ability to communicate effectively on matters of economic opportunity, including EOPís perspective and the work EOP is doing to address them.

Skills, Education and Experience

No candidate will meet all the criteria listed below.  We encourage you to apply if you're interested in the job and think you can do it well, even if you don't check every box.

  • 2-3 years of relevant experience.
  • Knowledge and/or experience communicating about economic opportunity, workforce development, and/or labor issues.
  • Educational or professional experience in a related field, such as social science, public policy, communications, journalism, public relations, English, marketing, or design.
  • Ability to think creatively and strategically about communicating key messages to diverse audiences.
  • Strong organizational and task management skills.
  • Strong writing and editing skills. Familiarity with AP style.  Ability to write in Spanish a plus.
  • Experience in media relations.
  • Experience developing, collecting, analyzing, and reporting on communication metrics and measures of impact.
  • Experience planning and hosting virtual and in-person events.
  • Experience using collaboration tools such as Google Drive, Slack, Asana, and Zoom.
  • Additionally, experience with (or interest in learning):

    • Web development
    • Graphic design/illustration/desktop publishing
    • Video/audio editing

Principal Interactions

Works directly with EOP program staff and consultants. Has routine interaction with project partners and constituents, grantees, funders and other EOP and Aspen staff.


Position requires travel. Amount of travel varies depending on time of year and requirements of specific projects.

Salary Range

$60,000-$70,000 per year, depending on experience and qualifications.

Job Location
