Public Programs:

The mission of the Public Programs department is to open the Institute to wider audiences, offering opportunities to engage in thoughtful, balanced inquiry. Programs range from major conferences — such as the Aspen Ideas Festival, Aspen Ideas: Climate, and CityLab — to more intimate discussion series. Programs take place in Aspen Colorado; Washington, DC; New York City; and other locations in the US and abroad.

Position Description:

As part of the Public Programs team, the Communications and Marketing Manager will be responsible for developing and implementing integrated campaigns to build audiences (both paid passholders and online) for Aspen Ideas events. Additionally, the C&M Manager will pitch media, support digital efforts, and coordinate strategic partnerships to increase awareness and leverage the Aspen Ideas brand.

The successful candidate will possess outstanding writing and analytical skills, be a dynamic self-starter with creative ideas and strong attention to detail to both strengthen and support communication efforts and help launch important new areas of work.

The Communications and Marketing Manager will work closely with diverse leaders across the Aspen Institute community. This position reports to the Associate or Managing Director and will work closely with the editorial team and Aspen Institute Communications team to ensure all efforts are internally visible and well coordinated.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

  • Implement a strategic marketing plan focused on priority audiences with measurable goals and objectives
  • Coordinate with editorial team on Aspen Ideas-wide communications deliverables
  • Work closely with Aspen Institute’s Associate Director of Media Relations to pitch media and monitor year-round coverage of Aspen Ideas
  • Support Aspen Ideas brand team on development and execution of strategic partnerships, including corporate professional development incentives, and Underwriter opportunities
  • Create and promote a menu of discounted offers to be used for targeted marketing
  • Act as point person for marketing efforts related to pass and public ticket sales, responding to inquiries and creating ads as necessary
  • Manage any external communications consultants
  • Manage CRM database
  • Coordinate with Aspen Institute communications team to leverage the Institute’s platforms, including the 5 Best Ideas of the Day, social media, and other opportunities
  •  Help maintain project plans and manage relevant consultant contracts

Shared Responsibilities:

  • Contribute to effective engagement and stewardship of current and potential strategic partners
  • Social Media: share daily content creation and posting responsibilities with  Editorial team, as determined by scope of events, campaigns, and overall team schedule
  • Recommend and curate content in coordination with Editorial team for the larger Aspen Ideas newsletter
  • Recommend and help maintain audience list segmentation for digital and direct mail campaigns
  • Support the production of print materials as needed

Principal Interactions:

Regular interaction with Public Programs leadership and program staff. Collaboration with the Editorial team, Conference Services Department, Aspen Institute Communications Department, and others, as well as routine communication with appropriate external vendors.

KNOWLEDGE, EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE:

  • Five or more years integrated communications experience in agency work, journalism, marketing, digital media, and/or other related or strategic communications experience with a track record of accomplishment
  • Experience working on conference, events, or luxury marketing a plus
  • Experience managing paid campaigns
  • Experience pitching media and garnering earned media
  • Outstanding writing skills with a focus on detail and accuracy
  • Graphic design skills a plus
  • Social media and web savvy and experience working with wide range of social media tools
  • Entrepreneurial acumen and drive, ability to see and respond to opportunities to strengthen and/or course correct program plan to increase impact
  • Excellent organizational, interpersonal, and time management skills
  • Excellent computer skills, particularly Google Suite, content management systems, Salesforce or similar CRM platform; database programs and Canva, a plus
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple, competing priorities and willingness to be flexible
  • Willingness to learn new technical concepts and tasks
  • Excellent team skills but capable of working independently and being self-motivated.

Level of Authority:

  • No supervisory authority
  • No budgetary authority
