Senior Director of Cybersecurity Programs

The Senior Director of Cybersecurity Programs will oversee all aspects of Aspen Digital’s cybersecurity programs and initiatives, both existing and to be developed. Along with staff, the Senior Director will ensure superb execution of existing projects and top-tier gatherings and working groups, identify and drive policy change across the cybersecurity arena, and engage deeply with high-profile stakeholders across government, the private sector and civil society. Already a subject matter expert, the ideal candidate will consistently grow underlying subject matter expertise and a strong professional network relevant to cybersecurity and technology, as well as help develop a vision and strategy for the next iteration of Aspen Digital’s growth and subject matter leadership in the field.

The Aspen Institute’s cybersecurity program, founded in 2017, stands as the field’s leading convenor of high-level dialogues between the highest levels of industry, government, and civil society, helping to drive change on issues like diversity in the cybersecurity workforce, IoT security standards, space communications and cybersecurity, international cyber norms and standards, BGP and routing security, and disinformation, among other efforts. Its work has helped lead to Fortune 100 hiring reforms, federal legislation, and spawned the respected Aspen Commission on Information Disorder. Specific programs under this umbrella include the Aspen Cybersecurity Group, the Aspen Cyber Summit, the Aspen Cyber Collaborative, as well as the program’s cyber workforce and its efforts around “cyber civil defense.”

The Senior Director will report to the Aspen Digital Executive Director. They will directly manage the Director, Aspen Cybersecurity Group, and Director, Global Cyber Partnerships, and work closely with the Senior Newmark Fellow for Cybersecurity Policy and the Director, Cyber Initiatives, as well as a thought partner to the Aspen Tech Policy Hub and the Managing Director for Aspen Digital.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Support the continuous growth and success of the flagship Aspen Cybersecurity Group, working closely with the group staff director and co-chairs to guide workstreams, recruit members, engage with government partners, and drive policy impact; this leader will also help develop and launch the Aspen Global Cybersecurity Group, working with the group staff director. In both cases, the senior director will help oversee project budgets and funding.
  • Lead the program’s schedule of annual, recurring cybersecurity events, including the flagship Aspen Cyber Summit — developing conference themes, agendas, recruiting speakers, participants, and sponsors, and overseeing event logistics, in partnership with the Aspen Digital events team — as well as other high-profile events like the Verify conference, held in conjunction with The Hewlett Foundation, and regular issue-specific roundtables, seminars, and workshops.
  • Manage corporate, government, and civil society engagement with Aspen Digital on cybersecurity issues, including developing educational and high-profile webinars, roundtables, and other live events, including identifying and recruiting program participants from a wide, diverse set of backgrounds, and handling relevant logistics with a high degree of care and service. These convenings and engagements include senior corporate leaders and officials from around the world, and experience handling dignitaries and protocol issues is a must. This portfolio will also include working with the Aspen Digital Executive Director to liaise with the programming teams of the Ideas Festival, Aspen Security Forum, and Society of Fellows on cyber and tech topics.
  • Engage with existing funders and help develop new sources of revenue from philanthropic and corporate entities.
  • Participate in the development and execution of other Aspen Digital initiatives and serve as a resource for program staff on emerging technologies, cyber topics, and overall strategy.
  • Represent Aspen Digital and Aspen cyber initiatives to the industry and the media as warranted. The ideal candidate will be interested in serving as a public-facing voice and thinker on cyber issues through social media, op-eds, press interviews, public engagement, industry events, overseas exchanges, and more.
  • Other duties as requested by Executive Director, Aspen Digital.
