The Inclusive America Project (IAP) envisions a society where diverse religious communities and non-believers fully embrace Americaís ideals by engaging and thriving with mutual trust and respect. To get there, we need spaces and places that foster religious pluralism in action.

Launched in 2012, the Inclusive America Project is dedicated to building the components that enable religious pluralism, creating active and intentional communities which bring them to life and allow religious pluralism to thrive.

We have codified seven components of religious pluralism that are deeply intertwined with each other, and that are crucial for advancing equity and the common good. Bringing these components to life entails serving as a national knowledge hub, developing playbooks for change, and forging and hosting platforms for action. Creating the conditions for religious pluralism to thrive entails mobilizing leadership, galvanizing resources, and captivating and connecting allied communities.

As the only organization in the country that is building field-wide infrastructure and accessible and actionable avenues for engagement across all faiths and fields, we play a unique role in the religious pluralism landscape. IAPís signature programs include the Powering Pluralism Network, a capacity-building program for faith leaders and experts in religious pluralism, the Religious Pluralism Funders Circle, which builds philanthropic support for this work, the Religion and Racial Justice Commission, and a wide range of research and publications which highlight best practices and thought leadership on religious pluralism.

Known for providing a neutral forum for a diverse set of actors to consider and seek solutions to hard problems, the Aspen Institute's strength lies in its convening power. In addition, the Institute has more than sixty years of experience designing and implementing outstanding values-based leadership programs for emerging private, public, and social sector leaders. IAP capitalizes on the Institute's strengths and collaborates with like-minded organizations and leaders, leveraging knowledge, relationships, and opportunities to build the field of religious pluralism.


Position Description

The Director, leading a team of six, will be responsible for fundraising, management, strategic planning, and program and financial oversight of the Inclusive America Project. The Director will have a demonstrated belief in the power of religious pluralism to build a better society, and an inclusive, communicative leadership approach with IAP and Aspen Institute colleagues.

This position reports to and works closely with the Executive Vice President of Policy Programs. This is a full-time position headquartered in Washington, DC.

Key Responsibilities

Leadership, Fundraising, Strategy and Program Implementation, and Stakeholder Engagement and Partnerships

The Director will be responsible for the strategic planning, financial and project oversight, program development, relationship management, and communication/public relations for the Inclusive America Project policy program.


  • Manage high-level staff and lead staff development.


  • Develop and execute IAPís fundraising plan, $1.4 million annual program budget, securing financial support from individuals, foundations, and corporations.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with foundation program officers to develop a robust funding pipeline.

Strategy and Program Implementation

  • Create and implement strategic plan.
  • Set strategic direction for all program activities, including the Powering Pluralism Network, the Religious Pluralism Funders Circle, and various public programs, roundtables, and meetings related to religious pluralism.
  • Grow IAPís funder affinity group, the Religious Pluralism Funders Circle to increase understanding of religious pluralism and institutional philanthropic giving to grantees working in the areas of religious pluralism.
  • Oversee grant deliverables completion.

Stakeholder Engagement and Partnerships

  • Expand the reputation of the Inclusive America Project as a thought leader on religious pluralism via:
    • Representing IAP at various Institute forums;
    • Representing IAP at external public and private engagements with organizations and venues that deal with religious pluralism; and
    • Publishing op-eds, articles, or other written materials as appropriate.
  • Establish relationships with faith-based leaders and ally organizations to build partnerships which advance the field.
  • Oversee program messaging and strategic communications to increase the publicís visibility of the Inclusive America Project.

Knowledge, Education and Experience

  • Undergraduate college degree: Master's or PhD in degree in religious studies, public policy or related field preferred.
  • 7-10 years of work experience (or equivalent experience) in the faith-based or moral leadership social sector with track record of effective management, accomplishment, and growth.
  • Demonstrated track record of commitment and leadership on religious pluralism.
  • Demonstrated experience and successful track record with fundraising, particularly with funders who fund faith-based or adjacent efforts.
  • Exceptional program planning and organizational skills; the ability to plan, prioritize and follow through with staff, partners and a variety of constituencies to meet program deliverables.
  • Outstanding interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills, with an ability to communicate effectively with diverse audiences, and to collaborate with partners and colleagues.

Principal Interactions

This position reports directly to the Executive Vice President of Policy Programs at the Aspen Institute, working closely with the Director of Operations for Policy Programs.
