About This Role

The Aspen Institute Economic Opportunities Program (EOP) seeks a creative, motivated, and organized communications intern for the spring of 2021. The intern will support our communications team in developing high-quality content across our channels, researching opportunities to enhance our communications efforts, and assessing and reporting on communications outcomes. Candidates should have an interest in advancing their skills in several of the following areas:

  • Writing and editing
  • Social media
  • Email and contacts
  • Event planning
  • Analytics/SEO
  • Media tracking
  • Graphic design/data visualization
  • Web design
  • Audio/video production
  • Digital accessibility

Qualifications

  • Current or recent college/graduate student or other professional early in their journey in the communications field.
  • Interest in expanding economic opportunity for low- and moderate-income Americans.
  • Experience or interest in learning and communicating about issues related to racial equity.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Knowledge of and adherence to professional ethics.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office or a comparable office suite.
  • Familiarity with AP and/or Chicago style a plus.
  • Experience or interest in learning:
    • Buffer, Hootsuite, TweetDeck, or another social media management platform.
    • Constant Contact, Mailchimp, or another email marketing platform.
    • Google Analytics, Matomo, or another web analytics platform.
    • WordPress, Drupal, or another content management system.
    • Photoshop, GIMP, Inkscape, or another graphic design/illustration platform.
    • Zoom, GoToWebinar, BigBlueButton, or another videoconferencing/webinar platform.

Possible Projects

Social Media

  • Draft and schedule social media content.
  • Identify opportunities to boost our social media impact.

Email and Contacts

  • Help to maintain EOPís contact list.
  • Help to draft and design email communications.

Event Planning

  • Support planning, promotion, and execution of virtual events.

Media Tracking

  • Curate news clips relevant to EOPís work.

Audio/Video Production

  • Support production of EOPís video clips and podcast.

Analytics/SEO

  • Compile and analyze data on EOPís web, email, and social communications.
  • Identify potential opportunities for improvement.

Web Design

  • Create and update pages on the Aspen Institute website, such as blog posts and report pages.

Digital Accessibility

  • Support efforts to ensure EOP materials are accessible to all participants, such as adding captions, writing alt text, and reviewing document structure to follow best practices.


Dates: March-July 2021 (actual dates can be adjusted; internship to run for approximately 16 weeks with possibility of extension into late summer/early fall)

Hours: Part-time, approximately 20 hours per week (negotiable)

Paid/Unpaid: Paid

Location: Remote, with access to our Washington DC office if needed (not required for the position)
