Research Coordinator- ANDE

The Aspen Network of Development Entrepreneurs (ANDE) 

The Aspen Network of Development Entrepreneurs (ANDE) is a program within the Aspen Institute. The Aspen Network of Development Entrepreneurs (ANDE) is a global network of organizations that propel entrepreneurship in emerging markets. ANDE members provide critical financial, educational, and business support services to small and growing businesses (SGBs) based on the conviction that SGBs will create jobs, stimulate long-term economic growth, and produce environmental and social benefits. Ultimately, we believe that SGBs can help lift countries out of poverty. Launched with 34 members in 2009, ANDE now comprises more than 280 members who collectively operate in more than 150 countries. 

ANDE is looking for a Research Coordinator, based in our Washington, DC office. This is a full-time position.

Position Description

You will play a critical role in supporting ANDE’s activities on research and impact measurement for the Small and Growing Business sector. You will be working with a small team that handles a wide range of initiatives to identify, collect, and analyze data to create useful resources on how organizations support Small and Growing Businesses.

You are a “yes, and… ” type of person. You are excited about taking on new tasks and challenges and are eager to create great experiences for others. You enjoy collecting and analyzing data and thinking creatively about research and measurement, and you find your zen in producing a clean data set. You are enthusiastic about synthesizing research to share with a broad audience, and are eager to expand your knowledge of the small and growing business (SGB) sector. You are at your best when you are rolling up your sleeves and getting stuff done.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Supporting the implementation of data systems (including data collection, aggregation, cleaning, validation, and analysis) for sector-wide data initiatives such as ANDE’s entrepreneurial ecosystem snapshots and ANDE’s annual State of the Sector Report
  • Executing data analyses to identify key trends from these data initiatives
  • Writing or proofreading research reports for practitioner audiences on current practices and opportunities in support for Small and Growing Businesses (SGBs)
  • Developing and disseminating communications materials for events to promote ANDE’s research efforts (such as mass email communications, planning webinars, and coordinating the publication design process).
  • Support the administrative aspects of the team’s activities by preparing contracts, processing payments, and supporting with grant reporting. 

The ideal candidate will have the following skills and qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field such as Economics, Statistics, Public Policy, Political Science, or Computer Science
  • 1-4 years of work experience demonstrating the above characteristics
  • Strong understanding of both primary and secondary data collection methods and processes: primarily survey design but also interviews and use of public datasets
  • Experience wrangling and cleaning “messy” datasets to make them usable for extracting insights
  • Demonstrated capabilities conducting data analyses and visualizations with Excel; additional experience with platforms such as Stata, R, or Python and/or other data visualization software preferred
  • Excellent writing skills to clearly communicate research findings through reports, blog posts, etc.
  • Very strong attention to detail (including ability to proofread and design high-quality slide decks)
  • Knowledge of or interest in entrepreneur support programs, in particular in a developing world context
  • Ability to deal with ambiguity and proactively identify areas for improvement in processes and deliverables
  • Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to work effectively on small teams and interact productively with project stakeholders
  • Sense of humor
