Deputy Director, Society of Fellows

Background:

The Aspen Instituteís Society of Fellows program is a vital group of 2,100 donors, philanthropic partners and friends who play an instrumental role in advancing the Instituteís mission by providing annual operating support. The Deputy Director, Society of Fellows (SOF) oversees the strategic direction and growth of the SOF program in Aspen, CO. The Deputy Director works to ensure exceptional performance of the donor program, including operations, programming content and speaker management, execution of events, donor cultivation and stewardship, and marketing and communications outreach.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  •  Manage SOF team in Aspen, including two to three full-time staff members and seven summer interns
  •  Design and execute SOF Aspen donor-exclusive programming in formats ranging from discussion receptions and salons, symposia, forums and dialogues. 
  •  Solicit new and increased contributions from potential and current Fellows
  •  Ensure robust stewardship of the SOF donor base
  •  Actively manage a portfolio composed of 100+ current and prospective Fellows with major and/or planned gift potential
  •  Participate in SOF Program Advisory Committee meetings, as necessary
  •  Recruit members to the Vanguard Leadership Circle and oversee monthly regional member meeting
  •  Collaborate with the Executive Director, Society of Fellows on strategic planning and implementation of regional cultivation and stewardship activities as they relate to the SOF
  •  Prepare SOF Aspen budget and ensure appropriate tracking toward annual revenue and expense goals

Knowledge, Education and Experience:

  •  Bachelorís degree in a relevant course of study
  •  Highly motivated, creative professional who can work comfortably in a high-paced very detailed oriented team environment.
  •  Seven or more years of professional experience in fundraising or related field, with at least three years in a management role
  •  Superior written and verbal communication skills
  •  Demonstrated experience in event planning and implementation
  •  Knowledge of effective volunteer management
  •  Keen sense of personal integrity and discretion with handling sensitive information
  •  Proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel; knowledge of Salesforce strongly preferred
  •  Strong budget and management skills
  •  Team player, able to work both independently as a self-starter, and cooperatively in a challenging, fast-paced, complex organization whilst nurturing and empowering departmental staff 

Level of Authority:

  •  Supervises two to three staff members, plus seven summer interns
  •  Budgetary authority
  •  Some travel required
