Communications Intern

Location: Washington, DC

The Aspen Institute 

The Aspen Institute is an educational and policy studies organization based in Washington, DC. Its mission is to foster leadership based on enduring values and to provide a nonpartisan venue for dealing with critical issues. The Institute has campuses in Aspen, Colorado, and on the Wye River on Maryland’s Eastern Shore. It also maintains offices in New York City and has an international network of partners.


The Communications Department manages external communications efforts including the Institute website, social media, media relations, digital editorial content, and provides communications counsel to Aspen Institute programs.

Basic Function 

The communications intern will provide administrative/logistical support to the Communications department in support of its work to promote the Institute’s programs, content, and overall brand to external audiences.  

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: 


  • Create and maintain event pages on the Institute’s website
  • Update Google calendar with upcoming events for weekly staff meetings
  • Maintain mailbox
  • Follow up with programs to share their photos after events, uploading the albums onto the Institute’s internal server and Flickr
  • Find and store stock and editorial images for later use on our digital channels
  • Assist with the building of graphics for digital signage used around the Institute’s headquarters


  • Provide editorial support for the Institute’s annual report and IDEAS: The Magazine of the Aspen Institute by assembling informational pages, collecting photos for selection, writing photo captions, and tracking photo credits
  • Identify and draft news items for inclusion in the Institute’s monthly email newsletter
  • Participate in weekly Communications staff meetings 


  • Assist with administrative and logistical tasks associated with planning and executing public events managed by the Communications department
  • Help with the Institute’s ongoing branding initiative
  • Other duties as needed


  • Status as a student or recent graduate interested in communications, public policy, nonprofit management, or a related field
  • Excellent research, writing, and verbal skills
  • Submission of a resume/CV and cover letter 
  • Strong attention to detail

Time Frame: 

  • minimum of 20 hours/week
  • Spring (Feb. 2019 – May 2019)
