Digital Associate and Producer- Communications

Department: COMMUNICATIONS
Location: Washington, DC

The Aspen Institute is an educational and policy studies organization based in Washington, DC. Its mission is to foster leadership based on enduring values and to provide a nonpartisan venue for dealing with critical issues. The Institute has campuses in Aspen, Colorado, and on the Wye River on Maryland’s Eastern Shore. It also maintains offices in New York City and has an international network of partners.

Communications Department Overview:

The Communications Department manages external communications efforts including the Institute website, social media, media relations, a podcast, digital editorial content and provides communications counsel to Aspen Institute programs.

Basic Function:

The Digital Associate and Producer supports the Aspen Institute’s communications efforts by helping plan, produce and distribute compelling digital content – focusing primarily on the Institute’s social media channels and the Aspen Insight podcast.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Social Media

  • Assist the Social Media Associate with a broad range of planning, content creation, and publishing tasks on various social media platforms.
  • With guidance, carry out strategic plans for social media at Institute events including, but not limited to, the Aspen Ideas Festival and the Aspen Security Forum.
  • Draft, edit, and disseminate social media content on various platforms.
  • Track, analyze, and report audience and content engagement data to inform future strategies for programs and the Aspen Institute brand as needed.
  • Research and stay abreast of trends in digital media and tools to enhance storytelling and increase reach.
  • Monitor social media conversation trends and news cycles to identify opportunities for the Institute to join or lead national conversations.
  • Monitor the Institute’s social media accounts to identify (1) opportunities for increased engagement and (2) changes in audience sentiment.

Podcast and Other Digital Content Development

  • Develop story ideas, interview subjects, write scripts, and record/edit audio content for the Aspen Insight podcast.
  • Guide Aspen Institute experts to produce impactful digital content that describes their work to a broad audience. Assist with social media promotion and audience development activities for the podcast.
  • Occasionally develop blog posts, newsletter items, media captions, and other content for the Institute website and digital platforms

Principal Interactions:

Interacts routinely with Communications Department colleagues, Institute employees at all levels, and external constituents including vendors.

Knowledge, Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Strong writing skills with a focus on detail and accuracy
  • Experience producing digital media for a variety of platforms involving text, audio, video, and image content –– experience with Adobe Audition preferred
  • Knowledge of the media and journalism landscape
  • Solid organizational skills with ability to complete projects and handle multiple tasks simultaneously
  • Ability to work independently and well with a diverse group of people throughout the organization
  • Demonstrated ability to work under pressure and tight deadlines
  • Familiarity with popular social media platforms and digital media trends
  • Familiarity with WordPress and similar digital publishing tools
  • Experience interpreting digital analytics to inform future content planning
  • Willingness to travel particularly in summer months (for Aspen Ideas Festival and Aspen Security Forum)
  • Flexible and versatile work style
