Editorial Coordinator- Public Programs

The Aspen Institute is an educational and policy studies organization based in Washington, DC. Its mission is to foster leadership based on enduring values and to provide a nonpartisan venue for dealing with critical issues. The Institute has campuses in Aspen, Colorado, and on the Wye River on Marylandís Eastern Shore. It also maintains offices in New York City and has an international network of partners.

Public Programs

The mission of the Public Programs department is to open the Institute to wider audiences, offering opportunities to engage in thoughtful, nonpartisan inquiry. Programs range from major conferences ó such as the Aspen Ideas Festival and CityLab ó to more intimate discussion series. Programs take place in Aspen Colorado; Washington, DC; New York City; and other locations in the US and abroad.

Basic Function:

The Editorial Coordinator will provide digital, editorial, and administrative/logistical support to the Public Programís editorial team, in support of its work to promote the Aspen Ideas Festival digital content, and overall brand, to external audiences.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

     Digital:

  • Stage posts contributed by Public Programs staff and partners in the websiteís CMS, adding art, hyperlinks, and copy editing.

  • Find and store stock and editorial images for use on our digital channels.

  • Tag data in the websiteís CMS.

  • Assist the Instituteís social media team on platforms such as Twitter and Facebook.

  • Support the production and management of the mobile app.

  • Support the production of the Aspen Ideas to Go podcast.

Editorial 

  • Write original posts to promote the Aspen Ideas Festival content.

  • Curate existing content for online editorial packages/promotion.

  • Identify and draft news items for inclusion in the Festivalís email newsletter and social channels.

  • Copy-editing/proofreading, as needed.

  • Support the production of the Aspen Ideas Festival print materials, as needed.

  • Participate in regular Public Programs staff meetings. 

  • Participate in weekly meetings with the Communications Team

Administrative/Logistical 

  • Provide administrative and logistical support for the editorial team, in support of the Aspen Ideas Festivalís content and production.

  • Assist with administrative and logistical tasks associated with planning and executing the Aspen Ideas Festival.

  • Other duties and projects as needed.

Principal Interactions:

Regular interaction with the Editorial Director and Department staff focused on production of content for web, video, social platforms, podcast, and print. Collaboration with the Aspen Ideas Health team, Conference Services Department, Communications Department, and others, as well as routine communication with appropriate external vendors.

Education, Experience, and Qualifications:

  • At least 2-3 years relevant work experience preferred.

  • Bachelorís degree in related field.

  • Journalism or marketing background preferred.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Experience describing complex ideas with clarity.

  • Must be willing to submit writing samples (including work published online) and complete a writing test.

  • Experience writing/posting on popular social media platforms; familiarity with platform-specific protocols.

  • Excellent organizational, interpersonal, and time management skills.

  • Working knowledge of content management systems, online publishing tools, and other digital tools preferred; knowledge of Photoshop, Flickr, Adobe Audition, and database programs, such as ArtsVision, a plus.

  • Must be intellectually curious.

  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple, competing priorities.

  • Willingness to learn new technical concepts and tasks.

  • Excellent team skills but capable of working independently and being self-motivated.


Level of Authority:

  • No supervisory authority

  • No budgetary authority
