Spring Intern- Urban Innovation

About The Aspen Institute Center for Urban Innovation 

The Aspen Institute Center for Urban Innovation harnesses the innovative power of cities to make them great places for all of their residents, especially those in underserved neighborhoods, to live, work, connect, and flourish.  At their best, cities are engines for inclusion, economic advancement, and innovation -- how can they continue to be so?  The Center is a white-board space where smart, passionate, creative people find the answers to that vital question together. 

The opportunity 

You are a hard-working student who is passionate about bridging the gap between innovation and inclusion in cities.  Youíre curious about the intersection of emerging technologies and cities, and are interested in how startups, small businesses, and entrepreneurship can have an impact on underserved communities and local economies. You take pride in focusing on details and are the first to raise your hand to help with any task, however small it may be. You have diverse interests and can see yourself jumping in and learning new skills that could contribute to making cities beacons of ingenuity and equity.

Likely projects for the spring could include:

  • Research: Provide research support for projects on smart cities, inclusive entrepreneurship, and local government innovation.   You may be asked to summarize reports, identify emerging themes and best practices, and draft memos and briefs.
  • Event Support: Support preparations for our spring convenings and follow up from fall events.  As of now some of our spring programming focuses on transformative city leadership, social entrepreneurship, the intersection of technology, values, and cities, procurement, and making the venture capital system more inclusive for women and people of color.
  • Database and Administrative Support: Update information in our CRM database, support all staff with a variety of administrative needs.
  • Communications Support: Help strategize, draft, and review newsletter content, manage and maintain Twitter as needed, update website content.

Who are we looking for?  

  • A creative, passionate individual, wanting to contribute to research and convenings making a positive impact on urban innovation practitioners 
  • Experience with both quantitative and qualitative research
  • Excellent writing and communication skills
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision
  • Strong attention to detail
  • IT Management Skills Ė Microsoft, Excel, Power Point and Internet

Details about the role 

  • Timing is late January to early May, around total of three months
  • 10-20 hours a week, depending on availability
