Communications Intern

Location: Washington, DC

The Aspen Institute 

The Aspen Institute is an educational and policy studies organization based in Washington, DC. Its mission is to foster leadership based on enduring values and to provide a nonpartisan venue for dealing with critical issues. The Institute has campuses in Aspen, Colorado, and on the Wye River on Maryland’s Eastern Shore. It also maintains offices in New York City and has an international network of partners.


The Communications Department manages external communications efforts including the Institute website, social media, media relations, digital editorial content and provides communications counsel to Aspen Institute programs.

Basic Function 

The Communications intern will provide digital, editorial and administrative/logistical support to the Communications department in support of its work to promote the Institute’s programs, content and overall brand to external audiences.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: 


  • Stage blog posts contributed by Institute staff and partners in a Wordpress CMS, adding art, hyperlinks, and copy editing.
  • Find and store stock and editorial images for later use on our digital channels.
  • Assist the social media team in live coverage of events on platforms such as Twitter, Facebook, Snapchat, and Instagram.
  • Follow up with programs to get/share their photos after events, uploading the photos onto the Institute’s internal server and onto Flickr.


  • Write original blog posts to promote the work of the Institute
  • Provide editorial support for IDEAS: The Magazine of the Aspen Institute and the Institute annual report by assembling photos for selection, writing photo captions, tracking photo credits, and assembling informational pages
  • Identify and draft news items for inclusion in the Institute’s bi-monthly email newsletter
  • Participate in weekly Communications staff meetings 


  • Provide administrative and logistical support for the public affairs team in support of Aspen Institute events
  • Assist with administrative and logistical tasks associated with planning and executing book talks and roundtable events managed by the Communications department
  • Send program staff relevant Institute coverage of their events and other content (PDFs of magazine pages, images, blog post links, etc. for use on their own web pages and external websites)
  • Other duties as needed.


  • Status as a student or recent graduate interested in journalism, communications, public policy, or a related field.
  • Must be willing to submit writing samples (including work published online) and complete a writing test.
  • Working knowledge of content management systems and other digital tools preferred; knowledge of Photoshop a plus.
  • Excellent research, writing, and verbal skills.
  • Commitment to detail.

Time Frame: 

  • minimum of 20 hours/week
  • Summer (May 2018 – August 2018) with possibility for extension
