Basic Function

The Director of Corporate and Foundation Relations, based in Washington, DC, will work to build a strategic, full-service corporate and foundation partnership program that cultivates, solicits, and manages the stewardship of Aspen Institute donors and partners. The Director of Corporate and Foundation Relations will help foster broad scale, multi-faceted partnerships and will be responsible for the Institute’s strategic corporate and foundation funding goals in collaboration with programmatic leaders. They will work closely with program directors across the Institute to assist in proposal concepts and sponsorship opportunities. The Director of Corporate and Foundation Relations will manage ongoing cultivation and engagement of existing and potential corporate and foundation supporters through the development of mutually beneficial, long-term partnerships to maximize support for the Institute’s strategic initiatives, priorities and events.

The Director of Corporate and Foundation Relations will represent the Institute at major meetings and events, when appropriate, across the country, specifically in Washington, DC, New York, San Francisco and Aspen, CO.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with Vice President of Institutional Advancement to grow the Corporate and Foundation Relations program which increases revenue to support the strategic direction of the Aspen Institute.
  • Implement a strategic approach to corporate and foundation giving including strategies for cultivating, soliciting, recognizing and stewarding donors.
  • Develop guidelines and processes that address acceptance and management of gifts from industry.
  • Manage the Aspen Institute’s corporate membership program, The Corporate Leadership Society, including prospecting, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of corporate members.
  • Serve as key liaison and a clearing house for Aspen Institute funding needs with foundations and corporations, with a focus on those that have multiple points of engagement with the Institute.
  • Identify and develop, in cooperation with Institute leadership and program directors, corporate and foundation relationships with new prospects and identify opportunities for expanding existing relationships.
  • Staff and support executive leadership with briefings and visits to foundations, corporations, and other industry prospects. 
  • Work with policy and public program directors to cultivate relationships with foundations and corporations, including identifying prospects, coordinating meetings and follow-up correspondence, letters of interest, and proposals when needed.
  • Manage the Philanthropy Roundtable Series in coordination with the Philanthropy & Social Innovation program staff.
  • Represent the Aspen Institute, specifically the Office of Institutional Advancement, as the main point of contact for foundations and corporations at conferences and forums, including the Aspen Ideas Festival, the Washington Ideas Forum and other internal and external conferences and events.
  • In cooperation with the Director of Operations, develop and implement best practices for prospect management and benchmarking to measure performance of the Corporate and Foundations Relations team and ensure consistent reporting and tracking in Salesforce.
  • Play a key role within the Office of Institutional Advancement in strategic planning to engage and grow relationships across the Aspen Institute constituency.

Knowledge, Education and Experience:

  • Masters degree in a relevant course of study preferred.
  • Ten or more years of professional experience in corporate and foundation fundraising or related field.
  • Understanding of ethical standards and fundraising principles.
  • Individual must be a highly motivated, well-organized professional with a progressive record of achievement and level of responsibility in fundraising.
  • Must have proven record in prospecting, donor cultivation and gift solicitation experience resulting in successful closed gifts.
  • Superior written and verbal communication skills.
  • High level of tact and diplomacy is required to work well with donors, trustees, volunteers, and staff at all levels.
  • Keen sense of personal integrity and discretion when handling sensitive information.
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with others, both internally and externally, to achieve the Aspen Institute’s goals.
  • Ability to foster teamwork, work cooperatively with others to set goals, resolve problems and make decisions that enhance organizational effectiveness.
  • Ability to set priorities, monitor progress towards goals, create and implement action plans, and evaluate the process and results.
  • Possesses a strong intellectual curiosity, passionate interest in ideas in the broadest sense, current events and trends, and especially those related to the Institute’s work and mission.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel; knowledge of Salesforce preferred.
  • Team player, able to work both independently as a self-starter, and cooperatively in a challenging, fast-paced, complex organization whilst nurturing and empowering departmental staff.
  • Travel required.
