Marketing and Communications Associate, Leadership Division

Location: Washington, DC

The Aspen Institute is an educational and policy studies organization based in Washington, DC. Its mission is to foster enlightened leadership based on enduring values and to provide a nonpartisan venue for dealing with issues critical to our society. The Institute has campuses in Aspen, Colorado, and on the Wye River on Marylandís Eastern Shore. The Leadership Division of the Aspen Institute builds off its 70-year history of developing leaders across generations and place to become more effective, values-based leaders. Today, the Division supports the life-long development of leaders through its seminar offerings, youth fellowship programs, and the Aspen Global Leadership Network. Furthermore, as an opportunity to learn from grass-roots community leaders and to activate its leadership networks, Weave: The Social Fabric Project functions within the Leadership Division.

Basic Function
The Marketing and Communications Associate will help advance the Leadership Divisionís marketing, communications, and brand building goals by expanding the capacity of the MarComm team to deliver best-in-class marketing and communications initiatives, providing support to programs within the Leadership Division, and managing the Divisionís brand positioning and marketing efforts. This work will be performed with diversity, equity, and inclusion; our internal partners; and operational efficiency at the center.  

The Marketing and Communications team is responsible for helping lift up the stories of impact across  the 14 AGLN Fellowships, Executive Leadership Seminars, Weave: the Social Fabric Project, and Youth Leadership Program teams, and work collaboratively with the Aspen Institute Communications team to position the work of these teams in the broader story of the Aspen Institute, build audiences, and capture themes, efforts, and initiatives in a compelling way. Values-based leadership, attention to detail, proactive and critical thinking, and excellent relationship and service skills are crucial in this role as it should contribute to identifying communications and marketing opportunities, improve effectiveness of how the Leadership Division programs are communicating, and support programs in achieving their communications goals.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Marketing, Analytics, and Insights

  • Manage marketing-focused initiatives with an emphasis on creating and stewarding new processes and capabilities for the Leadership Division and its programs
  • Lead implementation and execution of marketing and communications tools such as Pardot and Campaign Monitor
  • Develop and maintain marketing collateral for Leadership Division and programs
  • Generate, manage, and analyze key analytics and data points from web, social, and email initiatives
  • Manage, track, and store relevant articles featuring relevant content, Aspen Institute leadership experts, and program participants
  • Monitor key events, news, developments, and trends in leadership development and topics related to constituents and share with colleagues in the Division

 

Leadership Division Strategic Communications

  • Develop thought leadership and brand building initiatives that advance the Leadership Divisionís and its programs reputations in the marketplace
  • Lead stewardship of the Divisionís brands by maintaining brand assets (logos, style guides, etc.), and content library
  • Lead special initiatives in support of Leadership Division marketing and communication objectives
  • Produce division-level communications including board reports, drafts of external messages, and internal communications
  • Provide direct communications support to programs in Leadership Division through content production, strategic communications support, and asset management
  • Support event production and execution with communications and logistics
  • Support development and implementation of communication strategies for Leadership Division and its programs
  • Support creation and upkeep of content on the Aspen Institute flagship website
  • Support media relations efforts for programs and key initiatives by writing press releases, researching media markets, and contributing to messaging strategy

 

Operations and Capacity-Building

  • Assist in developing and maintaining MarComm Team $500,000 budget suggesting areas of investment, tracking costs of marketing and communications efforts, and contributing to the reporting of financial projects
  • Maintain and steward MarComm teamís contributions to Leadership Division Salesforce calendar, Aspen Institute central events calendar, and other key databases
  • Support systemizing and maintaining editorial calendar for programsí media channels including websites, blogs, social media accounts, and newslettes
  • Work with Instituteís central services teams on managing contracts, speaker releases, and aligning on Institute policies
  • Contribute to team meetings and monthly, quarterly, and yearly planning cycles
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree preferred or associateĎs degree with related experience
  • 3-6 years of related experience in marketing, sales, public relations, communications, or related field
  • Experience in building and executing marketing strategies for higher education, executive education, or B2B services a plus
  • Strong organizational and prioritization skills with ability to complete projects and manage competing requests, and at times under tight deadlines
  • Experience with paid social media marketing, SEO marketing, etc. a plus
  • Proficiency with database and email marketing platforms such as Salesforce, Pardot, or Campaign Monitor a plus
  • Proficiency in analyzing and interpreting data in Google Analytics, social media platform analytics, email marketing platform analytics, etc. a plus
  • Experience in producing a range of digital and print collateral including website content, social media graphics and videos, e-newsletters, booklets, one-pagers, PowerPoint decks, etc. a plus
  • Outstanding writing skills with a focus on detail and accuracy
  • Working knowledge of popular design tools; experience with Canva, Adobe Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator a plus
  • Experience with project management systems such as Basecamp, Asana, and Airtable a plus
  • Ability to work independently and well with a diverse group of people throughout the organization
  • Flexible, positive, collaborative, solutions and action-oriented attitude; relationship-oriented, believer in giving and receiving feedback; someone who is interested in assessing needs and proactively identifying solutions
  • Strong interest in the work and mission of the Aspen Institute and the ability to represent the organization externally.
  • Excellent cultural competence and experience working directly with constituents from diverse racial, ethnic, socio-economic, and geographic backgrounds.

 

Level of Authority: non-budgetary / non-supervisory
